Calling Cards plays on the social aspect of albumen cartes-de-visites, but instead of using standard portraits taken on a large format camera, I used photos taken on Facetime with my friends which were then printed as digital negatives to be used in the exposure of the albumen paper. Albumen printing is known to allow for a vast tonal range to appear in images, resulting in prints that are highly detailed. I was interested in subverting that quality by seeing how the digital quality of the iPhone screen will be translated into a process that is purely analog and non-digital. This project draws a parallel between Facetime calls and cartes-de-visites, which were both used for social exchange and connecting with others.
